Today was another one of those days where Google came to the rescue. Google and You Tube have become my best friends because I am currently repeating fourth grade math with a twist. Who knew? I didn’t sign up for this. I didn’t like it the first time and now they have the nerve to add a twist on what used to be simplistic, straight-forward math. How dare the math gods or educators do this to me and other poor, helpless parents helping their kids with homework every single night.
If you were to ask me to assess the suicidal or homicidal ideation levels of a person, I’d say no problem. If you were to ask me to facilitate a group discussion, I’d say no problem. If you were to ask me to plan a conference or program for a large group of people including vendors, I’d say no problem. If you were to ask me to create a DIY hair product for styling my hair, I’d say no problem. If I was asked to speak at an event on any topic, I’d say no problem. Fulfill the role of room mom, again no problem. I’d even say no problem if you asked me to pray and fast with you for a period of time because you want me to touch and agree with you as you seek answers from God. But when my soon to be ten year old walks up to me and says mom I need help decomposing fractions and adding or subtracting mixed numbers……insert very long pause and crickets! Houston, we have a problem. LOL!
So now I must turn to Google or You Tube for homework assistance. All I can think is when did I become this dumb? How do you not remember this? Oh, I remember……I didn’t like it the first time around. Plus, I’m not doing fractions for ANYTHING on a daily basis. I am laughing, but I am very serious about not enjoying math. I am firm believer after talking to one of my girlfriends that tutoring is not afar off for this kid and possibly me. Until that time comes, Google or You Tube will serve as my personal tutor.
I am sure there are many other parents searching these wonderful resources for help with many homework and non-homework related questions. You want to know how to make a tornado, You Tube it. You want to know how to do Common Core math, You Tube it. You want to find out the weather for the day or week locally or nationally, Google it. You want to try and make gluten-free or vegan dishes, You Tube or Google it. You want to train for a marathon, Google it. You want to install a new toilet, You Tube it. It doesn’t matter what you want to do because you have these two wonderful media options to help you master the universe. Until I am at my wits end with being a homework helper, or I just need to tap out and refer because it’s beyond my scope of understanding……You Tube and Google will serve me as much as I need until they come up with some other form of fast technology that can answer everything. So in the meantime, You Tube or Google it is!
